CCSP: Securing Cisco IOS Networks Study Guide (642-501)
Published in Paperback by Sybex (10 June, 2003)
Authors: Todd Lammle and Carl Timm
Average review score:

enough material to pass the exam
This book is a superb example of didactical excellence.
Although this book misses to include the VPN/Security Management
Solution 2.1 material which is needed for the exam, it does
include enough material for passing the exam. Writing a book
like this was written is just an act of art.

Todd Lammle did it again! I am not surprised.
As a Todd Lammle fan, I bought this book months ago and just received it from amazon.

It is a nicly laid out book, that is easy to read and understand. I have finished the first chapter, and skimmed through the rest, and it is a pleasure to read!

I was scared at first because I knew nothing about security. However, Todd Lammle has written this book in a manner that makes me feel like he is my buddy explaining this to me in an easy to understand way.

I have learned way more then I thought I would already.

Two thumbs, way up. Thanks, Todd!

The Collected Poems, 1952-1990: Yevgeny Yevtushenko
Published in Paperback by Henry Holt (Paper) (November, 1992)
Authors: Yevgeny Yevtushenko, Albert C. Todd, and James Ragan
Average review score:

Four decades of talent.
This 650-plus page volume does not cover the entire poetic work of Yevgeny Yevtushenko until 1990, but it comes close. Not all his collected poems are here, either: selections from from "Bratsk Station" and excerpts from long poems such as "Under the Skin of the Statue of Liberty" and "Ivan the Terrible and Ivan the Fool" reduce a bit the scope that we are presented with, although not the quality. His most memorable poems are here and the translation is excellent. What I like the most about Yevtushenko is that he is capable of writing good, even great poetry, from an absolutely opposite perspective to mine. He was, for most of his life, a convinced socialist, a man who really believed in the "human face" of socialism and even in that catchy word "internationalism" that the old autocrats in the Kremlin liked so much. Life seems to have made it very plain to him that the dream had always been a nightmare. But his poems are still here and one of the reasons why Yevtushenko hasn't been swept away like many of the so-called poets who sang for the Soviet regime, is that he never did that. He believed in socialism, but he could write "Russian Tanks in Prague" and tell the truth about the Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia in 1968. A very long poem, included in this collection, is "A Dove in Santiago: A Novella in Verse," where he attempts to understand and explain, from a socialist point of view, the events in Chile, 1973. He fails, but he is not the first one to get it wrong (most non-Chileans have gotten it wrong) and he, at least, does it with a lot of talent. I don't agree with Yevtushenko's socialism, but I can't help liking his poetry. "Babii Yar," also included in this book, is an ode to the Jews murdered by the nazis in a ravine, and violated a second time by the Soviets who covered up the crime because the Moscow government was deeply antisemitic. Yevtushenko writes about all this. He writes an elegy for New York and starts one of his poems with the verse "Moscow believed my tears..." This is a versatile poet, a man who has visited places and has the talent to tell us his version of what he has seen in an original, beautiful manner. Yevtushenko is far more accessible than some of the more modern Russian poets, but accessibility does not mean less quality. On the contrary, his poetry is clear, honest, passionate, direct, and articulate. My only regret regarding this volume is the absence of my favorite poem by Yevtushenko: "On the Death of a Dog." Other than that, his talent shines through this compact, affordable book, with poems such as "The City of Yes and the City of No," "Stolen Apples," "White Nights in Archangel," "Zima Junction," "The Heirs of Stalin," "Requiem for Challenger," etc. As soon as the book becomes available, buy it: you won't regret it.

Collective Action: Theory and Applications
Published in Hardcover by University of Michigan Press (December, 1997)
Author: Todd Sandler
Average review score:

Relevant book on collective action
This book is very well researched book on the subject on collective action which Mancur Olson began in his seminar book gThe Logic of Collective Actionh in 1965. The author examines the vast literature generated after 1965 and sees how those studies affect each of the three themes Olson made in gThe Logic of Collective Actionh: 1. the relationship between group size and collective action, 2. the relationship between composition of group and collective action, and 3. use of selective incentives and institutional design to promote collective action. The author explains how the conclusion in each of Olsonfs three themes changes when changing assumptions on technology of collective supply, form of utility function, characteristics of goods, interaction of group members, and constraints of the problem.
Since this book was published in 1992, it is not particularly new. But if you are interested in knowing the progress made after Olsonfs study in 1965 on collective action, either in theory or in application, this book serves your purpose well. Mancur Olson comments in the Forward of this book that gI learned a lot about many different subjects from reading this book,h emphasizing gexceptionally wide relevance of this book.h

The Companion to Southern Literature: Themes, Genres, Places, People, Movements, and Motifs
Published in Hardcover by Louisiana State University Press (January, 2002)
Authors: Joseph M. Flora, Lucinda H. Mackethan, and Todd Taylor
Average review score:

Sit Down with Southern Comfort
The Companion is a massive (1000+ pp)encyclopaedic approach to Southern literature (and culture, though The Companion makes no explicit claims toward tackling that subject). It has articles on people and works among other things, each authored by a wide variety of modern scholars. There is a wonderful index and a table of contents that arranges entries by groups (including Themes, Language, Religion, Music, etc.). The Companion is as current as any book of this type can be; thus, while the Companion contains entries on the Internet and some contemporary authors, both of these entries are destined to be somewhat dated even before the book hit the presses. It is a useful volume for students of Southern Literature, though, as with any encyclopedia, it must be considered as first-stop. The Companion refers readers to other texts and doesn't pretend to exhaust the subject matter of any of its entries. The Companion should also find favor with teachers who include (or want to include) Southern authors in their classrooms. The Companion provides instructors with quick reference contexts for many works that might profitably be included in a classroom.

The Complete Systemic Supervisor: Context, Philosophy, and Pragmatics
Published in Paperback by Authors Choice Press (January, 2003)
Authors: Thomas C. Todd and Cheryl L. Storm
Average review score:

A Must Read for MFT Supervisors!
Todd & Storm have written an excellent text which is considered by many to be the standard for training supervisors who work with marriage and family therapists. They give a good overview of various approaches as well as ethical, cultural, and gender considerations. There are many specific skills, tasks, and strategies provided.

This is a very readable text but it is not "light reading". It will take some time to digest all that is in it. The authors do not bore you with endless quotations and dry data but this is a text so it provides a comprehensive overview of the current literature, major figures, and current thinking in the field.
